Welcome to the Puffin class page!
This term in Puffins we will be learning about life during the Tudor period. We will be kicking off our topic with an exciting BANG! day building Tudor houses and baking Tudor biscuits. We will be learning about Tudor houses, comparing and contrasting the life of those who were and rich and poor and learning about significant figures from the period.
As writers we will be continuing our narrative writing with recounts of the exciting events taking place this term, like our outdoor learning week taking place from the 12th March – 16th March!
As mathematicians we will work on developing our understanding of fractions and measures such as grams, litres, time and distance. You can support this at home, for example by showing the children the weight of different food and the capacity of drinks bottles. This will be supported by weekly Mathletics sessions/times tables rock stars.
As scientists we will be continuing our work on Rocks and Fossils. In particular, we will be learning about how fossils are formed and the properties of rocks and soils. We will be practicing our Science skills through a variety investigations.
This term PE will be on Mondays and we will be swimming at the Olympiad on Friday mornings.
Spellings have changed this term as we will be trialling a new way of teaching and learning them. The children will be taught Phonics for three, short sessions a week. Alongside this, the children will be taught a spelling rule during an English session on a Tuesday. The following Tuesday, the children will be tested on the spellings before being taught a new spelling rule.
Alongside weekly spellings, there is a Year 3 and 4 Word list (containing words from the National Curriculum) which the children will need to learn. They will be tested on these termly. The list can be accessed below.
Spellings can also be practised using the Spelling Shed app.
Don’t forget Mathletics and ‘Timestable Rockstars’! Playing this regularly really supports the children in their learning of Maths and is great fun! The children will shortly be given log ins for these websites as well as log-in details for ‘My Maths’ whereby homework is sometimes set and completed on-line. Homework will continue to alternate between a week of English (linked to spellings) and a week of Maths (linked to times tables) and will be sent home on a Wednesday. It will then be due in the following Tuesday. If the children have any difficulties completing homework, please can they let one of the adults in the class know on the Friday before it is due in.
